Getting Started

The game of Association Football originated in England but the earliest records of a game involving kicking something like a ball date back to China over 2000 years ago.  Now Football or Soccer can truly be described as the world’s game.  Played everywhere and at all levels, football is a truly inclusive game requiring almost no specialised equipment to get started.  Every four years the Fifa World Cup attracts a global audience comparable to the Olympic Games. .

Outdoor football is played with a round leather or synthetic ball between two teams of 11 players.  The primary rule is that players other than the goal keepers may not deliberately touch the ball with their hands or arms. The dimensions of the pitch and goals etc. may vary but the objective is always to score goals.

There are many variations of ‘The beautiful game’ and thanks to improved facilities, small sided football (5-a-side etc.) is more accessible than ever.

Thanks to television, the professional game now attracts massive interest and players are global celebrities.  But for the rest of us football is a game we can play and enjoy at a level that suits us.

Kit you'll need

As always it is vital to stay hydrated so you can maintain your performance and avoid muscle cramp.  So take a drinks bottle with a good energy drink and maybe an energy bar for half time.
